Land of the Lost

Been playing around with some free form weblogging and podcasting type of stuff lately on my OPML Editor blog, Donovan’s thoughtStream. I’m interested in capturing streams of thought for publishing to the web, whether they be written posts or audio recordings. Experiments in progress.

Been doing a lot of hooping in the barn. It’s been raining almost non stop for weeks. I’ve been in contact with some old friends. The food’s been delicious. My company wonderful. Brain is engaged. Cold weather. Late nights and heavy slumbers.

Another day draws to a close for us all here on planet earth.

Route 66

My folks are off on a new adventure in their Bluebird bus, da bird. Yesterday I moved them from a Blogger account to a WordPress site on their own domain. Check it out… another WordPress installation and I even customized the header graphic with a picture of da bird.

Da Bird Blog: “Here we go. We start today from Amboy on the world famous Route 66. Doesn’t it make you wanna say ‘Get your kicks on Route 66″ If it does, chances are you are either old enough to have travelled this road or have sung with the song.”

WordPress K2 Theme Sidebar Testimonial Refresher

I know that’s a mouthful. Maybe this screen shot will better explain what I’ve done.

I use the Random Quotes plugin which allows you to embed random quotes into your pages. In case my visitors don’t realize that a random quote is generated every time the page is refreshed, I added the following code to my K2 theme sidebar.php file, right below the About stuff.

<h2>Testimonials</h2>
<span class="metalink"><a href="/" class="feedlink"><img src="http://www.donovanwatts.com/images/arrow_refresh.png" width="16" height="16" alt="Refresh" title="Testimonial Refresher" description="Click here to see another testimonial."/></a></span>
<p><?php wp_quotes_random(); ?></p>

The arrow_refresh.png graphic came with the K2 theme. I put a copy of it in my /images folder. Now, a visitor can simply click the green testimonial refresher button to refresh the page and see a new quote.

If I were writing a manual, which I’m not, this would be my first entry. The name of the manual isn’t WordPress: The Missing Manual. All rumors are purely speculation and I cannot comment on the topic any further at this time.

Getting iceplant radio site in order

iceplant radio is the weblog I maintained from March, 2001 to early 2005. The radio part of the name came about as a result of the software I chose to create the weblog, Radio UserLand.

In late 2005, I installed WordPress and started blogging on my other domain, donovanwatts.com. iceplant radio required me to fire up Radio UserLand every time I wanted to post to it. That’s not a big deal except that I already fire up another install of Radio UserLand to post entries to Radio UserLand: The Missing Manual. It’s no fun switching between two copies of the same application.

It’s also been difficult for me to figure out where I should post something. Here? There? Both places? Nah, I think it’s time to come up with something part automated, part manual.

So, here’s what I’ve come up. Rather than let iceplant radio posts trickle in, I’ve added my donovanwatts.com feedburner feed to the iceplant radio home page using the cool feature called Buzz Boost. That way visitors will see what I’m blogging about even though it’s originating from my other blog. Kinda like injecting my WordPress blog into my iceplant radio.

I’m still going to fire up Radio UserLand once in a while to post something just to iceplant radio. Those will only be posts that contain an enclosure. Or, what I like to call a podcast. Those now flow right through the upper right hand side of the template.

I’ve still got some stuff to sort out so that I’m totally happy but for now at least the site is back up and running. And it’s fairly automated at that, combining a feed from one site, a photostream from flickr, a search engine by google, and an easy to update podcast.
