4:20am. The quest to synthesize, organize, consolidate and sort through years of digital files is still underway. Currently, I’ve got two processes running. The first is email. I’m importing all my old Microsoft Entourage emails (1.1 GB) into Mail. That should take a few hours. Maybe I’ll sleep during that time. Then I’m considering yanking the whole lot into Gmail just to be done with it. Let Google store the emails.
The second process I’m running is a Full upload of iceplant radio so that I can get up to date XML archives of the weblog posts. I’m then going to take those XML archives and import them into WordPress so that Donovan’s Brain will truly contain most of the thoughts I’ve written over the years.
I’ve eliminated lots of duplicate files and have more to sort through.
Project related files/folders have been broken down like this:
* aHotProjects (Holds my client projects and any hot projects i’m working on)
* Projects (Holds all other projects)
* Projects/zFrozenProjects (zipped projects not to be touched. historical.)
Recent updates I’ve installed:
* DayLite 3 beta
* PathFinder 4.0.1
* WordPress 2.0
* Textpander
* SuperDuper
* MarsEdit 1.1
* Dreamweaver
* Skype
* FireFox
* Speed Download
* TextMate
Also, I finally ditched the Dock and I think I’m going to stick with it. I think the dock is a time waster. I don’t want anything popping up at me or turning a color or showing me how many emails i’ve got waiting. Give me back my screen. I turned off the Dock and find my productivity is improving as a result.
No bed for me. I sleep on a thermarest. Not bad, really.
All pictures are now in iPhoto except a few that are clearly marked for dealing with accordingly.
One thing that’s come to mind during this sweep is the notion of file formats. I’ve got some old stuff laying around that I can’t even open anymore because I don’t have the application anymore. Egad. That’s partly what is driving me like a madman to consolidate what I can into the most current applications I am using. All part of my no data left behind program. Though I am tossing out the junk as I come across it.
Must sleep. I’ll hopefully come back to this post and link everything up but for now I’ve got to abide by my itchy post finger..

The Law and Disorder Radio site redesign by Getting Sites Built just went live. Monday’s show is already posted. Please visit the new site and listen to the latest show…
Host Discussion on the case filed by the Center for Constitutional Rights and the National Lawyers Guild on the alleged illegal spying by the NSA. Along with other citizens and noncitizens in this country, attorneys at CCR have good reason to believe their private conversations may have also been monitored by the NSA.

It’s been so fun digging around my hard drive. I found some really old stuff from when I first discovered the web. That was around 1996. During that year, I wrote three essays. In 1997, I wrote three more. I called them DomNet and posted them to my site for the world to read. These essays were inspired by Dave Winer’s DaveNet essays. I’m going to post them to Donovan’s Brain where they can once again settle in on the net.
The first two DomNet’s are now online:
* i’m always crashing in the same car
* can flow motion

The results of the CORAL web site redesign are impressive. Congratulations to CORAL and the design team at Digipop.
From 2000 to 2005, I was the CORAL webmaster. I created and maintained the entire site, along with a half dozen in house Mac servers that I donated to the organization when they hired me. I had to take my servers with me! I had just moved from Hawaii to California, leaving my small web hosting business behind. What to do with my servers? Donate them to CORAL, and put all my knowledge and energy into transforming CORAL’s internet presence. And that I did.
The new design has many of the elements that I was responsible for…. like the beautiful header graphic and the ocean blue theme. Well, actually Bryan Bell created the theme, I was just the man who made things like that happen much of the time by hiring out people to help build the site. The gallery is still there. The online databases are there. And so is all the content. Just rewrapped in a nice new look.

It’s nice to see the RSS feed link right up front too. CORAL was one of the first sites on the web to provide an RSS feed. We even had our own Manila site with multiple news authors posting coral reef related news back in 2001.
The design team definitely did a good job with freshening up the style, tool. The fonts look great, the design is light with lots of nice white space.
Again, kudos to Digipop and I wish CORAL all the best. They are a wonderful organization doing important work to keep the world’s coral reefs alive and healthy.

It’s been a while since you backed up, hasn’t it? I’ll spare you the doom and gloom scenario and keep this as a short reminder to backup your data. Now. Right now. Not tomorrow. Right now. Stop reading this post and backup your data somewhere. Anywhere. Right now. Just get it in two places. If you email me tomorrow and say, my hard drive crashed… and I don’t have a backup… then I’m going to say, “I told you so.”
Now, go backup your files. Go on… git!
On a Mac? Try my favorite, SuperDuper. On a PC… hmmmm.. I’m not sure what you should use. Try ask Mr. Google.

On his blog, Les talks about the magic of Reading Lists. I’m excited about them as well and am going to look into this del.icio.us RSS-to-OPML solution to create a Reading list of my shared bookmarks.
…these could even be collaboratively maintained by way of del.icio.us and a simple RSS-to-OPML gateway service. I’ve got to say, this could be one of the niftiest bits of mojo to hit syndication and aggregation tech in awhile.
