Streaming music from my OS X laptop to my Nokia 770

Determined to listen to my music collection, which lives on a hard drive attached to my OS X laptop, on d770, I learned there are multiple ways. None easy.

However, with the help of Teemu’s Blog, I think I can figure it out. I will share the experience with you here.

Teemu has been experimenting with streaming music to his Nokia 770 and tells of two viable options. The first is to turn on sharing in iTunes on my Mac. Easy enough. Then, after installing Rhythmbox on my d770, I should be able to see my songs as a playlist. Oh, but wait.. first I must install xterm on the d770 and start mDNSResponder service. You can do it like this in xterm:

/var/lib/install/usr/bin/mDNSResponder

Whoa. Kinda cryptic to me but in order to get my musical fix, it is something I must learn to do. Where is this xterm application? A quick search on Internet Tablet Talk turns up this page with a version of xterm that will work on a Nokia 770. I download it and install. Fire up xterm and enter the magical command.

Next i start Rhythmbox, connect using the connection manager and VOILA! I am now streaming my music from iTunes to Rhythmbox. Wow. I feel good.

The other option is to install Ampache on my laptop but that procedure seems much more complex. I might try to install it anyway because I imagine that browsing my tunes on the d770 using the built-in browser might be less of a memory hog than Rhythmbox.

Another option I thought of as I was entering this post is the SlimServer by Slim Devices. I use this to stream my iTunes music to my home stereo. I wonder if there is a solution here as well?

Thanks Teemu for the instructions. I find your blog entries on the Nokia 770 invaluable.
